What is STAR?

STAR stands for School Tax Relief. The program provides a partial exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences such as one, two, or three-family homes, condominiums, cooperative apartments, and manufactured homes.

Who is eligible for the STAR exemption?

The STAR program has been extended to all homeowners regardless of age or income. The basic exemption will be up to $ 30,000 in the 2001-2002 school year.

What about STAR exemption for Senior Citizens?

Homeowners 65 and older with incomes under $ 60,000 will receive up to a $ 50,000 exemption from the full value of their property.

Where must the STAR application be filed?

With your local assessor.

STAR and Manufactured Housing Communities

Since our community residents pay their school taxes indirectly through their site rent each month, residents in both Canandaigua Country Estates and Picture Book Park will receive their STAR tax refund in one lump sum in the fall of each year from the community, as long as they have applied for the program at the Town assessor’s office. The Town Assessor’s office makes the determination on the value of each property. We encourage all residents to take advantage of this program. We have several residents who receive several hundreds of dollars back at the end of each year from the STAR program.

For more information on how the STAR program works or how to apply, please contact your local Town Assessor’s Office.
